Summers County (2014 population—13,417) is located in the southeastern region of West Virginia, scenically placed between the beautiful Greenbrier and New River Valleys. The City of Hinton (2013 population—2,588) serves as the county seat and is the sole municipality within Summers County. The railroad boom of the early 20th century helped to build Hinton and Summers County. However, the county’s current economy is based primarily on tourism thanks to the Bluestone Dam and Lake along with the Bluestone, Greenbrier, and New Rivers which converge in Hinton. Further, the New River Gorge National River begins at Hinton and flows northward into neighboring Fayette County.

12/21/2020 - The COVID-19 Vaccine (Moderna) has arrived!

The VA Medical Center is following guidelines established by VA leadership, CDC, and national immunization experts. We are eager to vaccinate both our staff and the Veterans we serve, and to do so in a safe, coordinated manner.

We will contact Veterans based on their risk-level to schedule appointments for vaccination. We appreciate your interest in receiving the vaccine.

VA.gov has launched a site for gathering information from Veterans interested in being vaccinated (here) This is NOT an appointment or guarantee of vaccination access.

Flu Shots Now Available

Hershel “Woody” Williams VA Medical Center (HWW VAMC) is once again hosting a flu shot drive through clinic for area Veterans and CHAMPVA card holders.
“Our Veterans should receive their flu vaccines to reduce their risk of influenza illness and hospitalizations,” said Stephanie Conlon, HWW VAMC Primary Care Nurse Manager. “The vaccine can prevent illnesses and flu-related doctor’s visits each year.”
For many years, a drive through clinic has been held near the water tower but this year, it’s been relocated to the lower road (Courage Drive) that looks to ease traffic flow problems and allowing a drive through or turn without going past the main lobby entrance. The main campus drive through isn’t the only place to get a flu shot.
“Veterans can also get their flu shot in the following clinics while they are visiting the VAMC during an appointment,” said Ms. Conlon. “They’re available in primary care, mental health, surgery clinic, medical specialty clinic, our walk-in clinic, and of course, at our community-based outpatient clinics (CBOC).'
Eligible Veterans can also receive their seasonal flu shots at more than 60,000 Community Care Network (CCN) retail pharmacies and urgent care locations. This replaces the Walgreens Retail Immunization Care Coordination Program, which ended in March 2020. Click to here (https://www.va.gov/COMMUNITYCARE/flushot.asp) to learn more about these CCN locations. You can access a map to all community in-network locations and a chart indicating what type of locations Veterans can go to in their regions to receive their flu shots. No appointment or VA referral is required. Veterans need to present a valid government issued identification (e.g. Veterans Health ID Card, Department of Defense ID card, state issued driver's license or ID card, etc.).
Veterans can also use the VA Locator to find a VA facility, in-network retail pharmacy or urgent care location near them by using this link: https://www.va.gov/find-locations

Eligibility

  • Retail pharmacies: Veterans must be enrolled in the VA health care system
  • Urgent care locations: Veterans must be enrolled in the VA health care system and have received care from a VA or in-network community provider in the past 24 months
