WHAT WE DO

  • MENTOR Rhode Island coordinates school-based mentoring programs in Warwick, Woonsocket, Cranston, Pawtucket, and Newport/Middletown serving nearly 400 students! The vast majority of teachers, parents, mentors, and mentees report high satisfaction levels with the program as well as improved academic and social indicators for mentees.
  • MENTOR Rhode Island supports a statewide network of 57 mentoring programs serving 32 Rhode Island cities and towns. MENTOR Rhode Island provides these programs training in the best practices in mentoring (The Elements of Effective Practice), and assists them with recruitment and overall advocacy for mentoring. Combined with its direct service programs more than 5,000 young people are being served by MENTOR Rhode Island and its partners.
  • MENTOR Rhode Island serves as Rhode Island’s only technical assistance provider for the National Mentoring Resource Center; assisting both network partners and other organizations who want to create or improve their mentoring program.
  • Through the NMRC MENTOR Rhode Island provides assistance to both the My Brother’s Keeper Success Mentors Initiative, spearheaded by the White House, and the P-Tech Program, organized by Commerce RI. MENTOR Rhode Island is working with these innovative mentoring programs at several schools in Providence, to ensure they have the training and technical skills required, and the infrastructure in place, to run a quality youth mentoring program.
  • Through two grants from the United Way of RI, MENTOR Rhode Island is working to improve mentoring opportunities for more Rhode Island youth. One grant allowed MENTOR Rhode Island to hire a dedicated recruiter to find more quality volunteer mentors around Rhode Island. These new mentors will help reduce the 900 child waiting list for mentors that exists among partnering programs. The second grant is a joint effort with the Institute for the Study and Practice of Non-violence. The organizations have teamed up to offer the “Let’s Make This Work” program. The program combines ISPN’s 10-month workforce training curriculum with mentoring, so system involved youth can gain the skills and the relationships they need to successfully transition to the workforce.
  • Through a grant from the Amgen Foundation, MENTOR Rhode Island supports the Million Women Mentors RI initiative, helping to promote STEM mentorship for underserved populations.
  • MENTOR Rhode Island will implement Youth Initiated Mentoring for older mentees or youth without access to a formal mentoring relationship. Youth Initiated Mentoring teaches kids the skills they need to recognize the fact that they might benefit from having a mentor, how to find the mentor that is right for them at that particular point in their life, and how to ask someone to be there mentor.
